Wildlife Trust Ecology Group (WTEG)
History
In 2002, the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough started the unique Wildlife Trust Ecology Groups project, previously untried anywhere in the country. The project was launched, covering clusters of reserves in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, with over three hundred volunteers pledging support.
The Limestone Ecology Group was the first to be set up. It was followed by two more groups, one covering the chalk grassland reserves in Bedfordshire and Luton, and another focusing on reserves comprising gravel pits and wet meadows along the Nene Valley in Northamptonshire. The Greensand Ecology Group, covering the heathland, mire and woodland reserves along the Greensand Ridge, was launched in the Spring of 2004. A fifth group was launched in Cambridgeshire in March 2006 thanks to further funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The original project was made possible after successfully securing an 18-month grant, from Defra’s (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund grant scheme.
