These mounds, one of chalk and one of sand, together with the natural clay soil of the site, represent the three main soil types of Bedfordshire. Our intention is to encourage colonisation by the natural plants of the chalk and sand to illustrate the diversity of Bedfordshire’s flora. We also use these areas with groups investigating the drainage properties of the different soil types.
