Flit Vale Local Group
The River Flit rises in a spring-fed pond to the east of Charlton and then flows through Flitwick, past Greenfield and Flitton, then through Clophill, Chicksands, and Shefford, past Standford, before meeting the River Ivel at Langford. The Flit and its tributaries are designated a County Wildlife Site.
The jewel in this small river's many treasures is Flitwick Moor, a remnant of a nutrient-rich valley mire, and the largest area of wetland in Bedfordshire. A designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, Flitwick Moor's wetland contain acidic waters from the iron-rich Greensand Ridge, a prominent geographic feature through Bedfordshire, and the alkaline flow of waters rising from the chalk-downs. Harvested of its peat until half a century ago, the Moor's delicate ecology provides a home for rare and special flora and a rich collection of invertebrate fauna.
The Flit Vale local group, formed in October of 2008, draws its membership from the Toddington, Flitwick and Ampthill area and has a mission to promote the wider understanding, appreciation and conservation of all forms of wildlife in the Flit Vale area by:
- Organising guided walks around local wildlife sites
- Arranging talks by local experts on wildlife topics
- Encouraging the participation of local people of all ages in the above, and in other related activities including volunteering and wildlife watch groups..
For all events and activities organised by the Flitvale Local Group, please see What's on?
It’s not necessary to be a member of the Wildlife Trust to attend events, however, if you do join your annual subscription directly benefits local wildlife.
