Totternhoe butterflies
In 2003, thanks to the generous support of local people, The Wildlife Trust was able to buy Totternhoe Quarry in South Bedfordshire and begin the long process of turning it in to a fabulous nature reserve for people and wildlife. The Trust’s first job was to remove the burnt out cars and improve fencing. Since then, the Trust has been working hard to restore the beautiful flower-filled chalk grasslands.
At the end of June 2008, the Trust received the exciting news that SITA Trust have offered us nearly £50,000 to carry out a two-year project to further improve our understanding of the needs of some of the stunning butterflies that live at Totternhoe Quarry, including Duke of Burgundy, chalkhill blue and small blue.
During the project, we aim to use the acquired knowledge to begin enhancing both the Quarry and the nearby Knolls, as well as our other local chalk grassland nature reserves including Pegsdon Hills near Barton-le-Clay, Blows Downs at Dunstable, and Sewell Cutting just east of Totternhoe. The work is vital to ensure these sites are in the best condition, not only for butterflies, but all wildlife that live in these nature reserves.
As part of the funding agreement, we need to find 11% of the grant value to release the £50,000 grant, and we need to do this by 31 August 2008 or we will lose this fantastic opportunity. An appeal target of £5,500 has been set and we hope that you will be willing and able to make a contribution towards this. For every £1 you donate, £10 of funding for this exciting project is released, so anything that is donated is very much appreciated.
All donors will receive a personal invitation to find out more about the project at a public event and guided walk at the reserve next spring.
To make a donation, please donate either online, by credit or debit card over the phone, or by cheque or postal order by post, indicating that the donation is for the Totternhoe Butterflies appeal. Thank you!
