Magical Meadows receive major cash boost
A makeover is planned for reserves thanks to funding
Eight fabulous meadows in Cambridgeshire have received a major cash boost enabling The Wildlife Trust to embark on the second year of the 'Magical Meadows in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Project', helping to enhance the meadow reserves for the benefit of wildlife and local people.
The meadows included in the project are Arthur’s Meadow near St Ives, Chettisham and Muriel’s Meadows near Ely, Fulbourn Fen just outside Cambridge, Houghton Meadows near Huntingdon and St Ives, Upwood Meadows near Ramsey and Huntingdon, Skaters’ Meadow in Cambridge, Soham Meadow, and Southorpe Meadow near Peterborough.
Funding was generously provided by the Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group (WRG), administered and distributed by Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN), The Earl Fitzwilliam Charitable Trust and The Dominic Trust.
Mark Ricketts, the Trust’s assistant reserves manager in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, explained: “Meadows require ongoing TLC to keep them full of flowers and buzzing with insects, otherwise they have a tendency to become overgrown with thistles, brambles and bushes. This funding will help us to keep these meadows magical for many years to come.”
Volunteers also continue to play an important part in the project, supporting Wildlife Trust staff in many activities, from orchid monitoring to hay cutting and hedge restoration, playing an invaluable role in the conservation of local nature reserves.
