Children go wild at the Countryside Classroom

Wind in the Willows Family Fun Day attracts good numbers

The newly refurbished Ramsey Heights Countryside Classroom hosted one of its most successful family events during half term last week after 45 children and 25 adults attended 'Wind in the Willows Family Fun Day'.

Families spent an enjoyable afternoon playing nature detectives and searching for signs of ‘ratty’, badger, mole and toad at the reserve at Ramsey Heights. They went on wildlife trails and tried numerous craft activities associated with the characters and habitats of Kenneth Williams’ childhood tale.

Tanya Mercer, Great Fen campaign officer, said: “It was really wonderful to see so many families. This is exactly why the classroom was renovated – to provide a safe and accessible venue for fun, educational activities that lots of local people can enjoy. Hopefully everyone will leave today understanding a little bit more about their local wildlife and the habitats they live in”.

Helen Moore, centre manager for the Countryside Classroom, said: "This Great Fen event was really successful thanks to the enthusiasm of the volunteers and staff who led the activities and the families who took part. Anyone interested in these events should come and join the Great Fen Wildlife Watch group. It’s open to children aged 7-11, years 3-6, and is held once a month.  The Watch group will provide similar days to this one, offering children the chance to learn about wildlife through fun activities”.

The improved Ramsey Heights Countryside Classroom is adjacent to Woodwalton Fen and will also be used as a welcome area for group visits to the Great Fen Project and for special events relating to the huge fenland restoration project.
