Man power for wildlife

National Grid employees help Northampton wildlife

Staff at National Grid took a break from their usual routine to help The Wildlife Trust with essential scrub clearance work at Bradlaugh Fields Nature Reserve in the centre of Northampton — increasing the size of the grassland areas and encouraging wild flowers at the site flourish again next spring and summer.

Bradlaugh Fields Nature Reserve contains fine examples of flower-filled limestone grasslands and fragments of ancient hedgerow. If you are lucky you may find an exquisite bee orchid, or maybe even the rare adder’s tongue fern in wetter areas. Green woodpeckers and sparrowhawks can be seen, and the area is also renowned for having the largest population of badgers in Northampton.

Staff from National Grid have been very generous with their volunteer support in Northamptonshire in 2008. Along with this task, teams have also built floating nest sites for common terns at Pitsford Water Nature Reserve; helped control bracken at Lings Nature Reserve; and taken part in further scrub clearance at Twywell Hills and Dales.

The Wildlife Trust receives help from a number of different companies, which often takes the form of volunteering. If you would like to find out more, please contact Caroline Prout on 01954 713549 or email Caroline.Prout[at]wildlifebcnp.org.
