New Local Group gives more for wildlife

We are pleased to announce the launch of the new Towcester Local Group in Northamptonshire.

New chair of the Towcester Local Group, David Reed, said ‘I have been a member for a number of years, and I hope our new group will be made up of people who want to get involved in the community as volunteers to improve habitats and conditions for both wildlife and people’.

This group joins our 12 other active Local Groups serving Bedford, Beeston, the Flit Vale, Sharnbrook, Cambridge, Ely, Huntingdonshire, March, Brackley, Desborough and District, Finedon and District, Oundle and.District and Summer Leys. In 2009-10 we hope to jump-start new groups in the communities around Peterborough and the Great Fen as well as.

Each of the Trust’s Local Groups, organised by dedicated volunteers, help local communities get more involved in wildlife conservation. They provide an opportunity for communities to join together to discover, enjoy and protect wildlife through guided walks, illustrated talks and meetings.  Many provide practical help on nature reserves and raise funds for conservation and education work.  Some spread the word about wildlife in local parish newspapers, or at community events, and all encourage new people to support the Trust’s work by becoming members.

You can help!

  • Join a Local Group committee – regular meetings are held to plan each Group’s activities.
  • Start a new Local Group – Trust staff will help find other volunteers to join in.
  • Come along to winter meetings and summer events – learn about wildlife through illustrated talks, get to know your local reserves, get stuck in with practical management work or just join in at social events.
