Cambridgeshire's Meadows are Heaven Scent
One of Cambridgeshire’s most threatened and valuable wildlife habitats is being thrown a life line.
The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough has launched a new project today called Heaven Scent, which will protect eleven of its meadowland nature reserves across the county. The project’s name evokes the heady perfume of meadow flowers in the spring and summer.
The meadows that will benefit from the project are: Arthur’s Meadow near St Ives, Fulbourn Fen, Gamlingay Cinques and Gamlingay Meadow, Houghton Meadows, Muriel’s Meadow near Ely, Shepreth L-Moor, Skater’s Meadow in Cambridge, Soham Meadow, Upwood Meadows and Woodwalton Marsh.
BCNP Wildlife Trust Chief Executive, Nick Hammond said, “Our charity is absolutely delighted in these difficult economic times to have secured such generous grants, which will mean our conservation experts can get to work on restoring beautiful and extremely rare wildflower meadows across the county, so helping to protect an important aspect of our cultural heritage.”
The project is happening thanks to grants of £54,000 from SITA Trust, which makes awards through the Landfill Communities Fund, £2,000 from The Colin Reid Countryside Trust, £2,000 from The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, £500 from The St Mary’s Charity and £1,000 from the Marshall Group of Companies.
