'Go Wild' in Peterborough. Your local nature reserve needs you!

The Wildlife Trust is looking to recruit new voluntary wildlife wardens to help look after some its Peterborough nature reserves as part of the Peterborough Go Wild Project.

So, if you like being outdoors and have an interest in wildlife then this is for you.

Voluntary Wardens may carry out a range of activities from wildlife habitat management, reserve maintenance and biological monitoring to liaising with visitors and school groups and encouraging local communities to get involved and enjoy the site.

Although such a role is a voluntary (unpaid) position, the enormous benefits include gaining new skills and certified qualifications.  For the successful applicants The Wildlife Trust will pay for training in first aid, use of hand tools, surveying, specialist wildlife training workshops, and appropriate power tools (for example brushcutter or chainsaw use).  Additional benefits include meeting new people, learning from Wildlife Trust staff and other volunteers, enjoying unique hands-on encounters with rare and common wildlife, and spending time on some of Peterborough’s most spectacular landscapes.

Rachel Price, Community Wildlife Officer for The Wildlife Trust said “This is a great opportunity to gain a whole set of new skills, meet new people, and do something positive for yourself, the environment and the local community."

The Go Wild Project is a partnership between The Wildlife Trust, Perkins and the Caterpillar Foundation, which has provided over £20,000 through the latest wave of funding to The Wildlife Trust to bring wildlife and communities together in Peterborough.

Annette Johnson, marketing communications officer at Perkins said: “With summer now upon on us, this is a great opportunity for people to get out and about and involved in their local environment.  Through the ‘Go Wild’ project people from across Peterborough will be able to come together and discover more about the wild species and plants on their doorsteps."

Wardens are required for the following sites:

Eye Green Local Nature Reserve, Eye

Lattersey Local Nature Reserve, Whittlesey

Stanground Newt Ponds, Stanground

Stanground Wash, Stanground

All that is required is an interest in wildlife, some practical skills (although training is offered), good communication skills and an ability to follow health and safety guidelines.
