Explore the secret world of moths at Pitsford Water nature reserve

In celebration of National Moth Night 2009 the Wildlife Trust is holding an open morning at Pitsford Water Nature Reserve on the 20th September 2009 between 9.00am and 12.00pm. National Moth Night is an annual event designed to raise awareness of moths and get people involved with moth recording.

Moths are truly fascinating creatures and are definitely not just dull and brown! Pitsford Water is an ideal place to discover more about them, being home to some 800 species from the spectacular Privet Hawk-moth, with it’s 12cm wingspan to the increasingly rare and stunning Garden Tiger, with it’s bright red and yellow patterning.

This is also an ideal opportunity to learn more about the reserve, its history, management and wildlife and to chat with the wardens and volunteers. Throughout the morning there will be opportunities to go through the moth traps and explore the night’s catch (meet at 9.00am for this activity), informative displays, moth trap demonstrations, a self-guided nature trail and activities for the kids. The morning is free to attend and refreshments will be available. The event is at Pitsford Fishing Lodge, Brixworth Road, Holcot, Northamptonshire, NN6 9SJ and ample parking is available at the Lodge.

With such a wide variety of habitats including woodland, grassland and wetland and stunning scenery the reserve has so much to offer and is not just a haven for wildlife, but for people too. Pitsford Water Nature Reserve has recently celebrated it’s 40th anniversary and is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, due to the large numbers of ducks which use it each year and for it’s important breeding birds such as Garden Warbler and Blackcap.

So come along on the day for some fresh air, get to know our amazing nocturnal wildlife and experience the magic for yourselves at this fantastic Northamptonshire reserve!
