Moths by Moonlight
A night-time moth-catching event is being held at Cambridge’s new nature reserve this Friday (21 August).
The moth survey will take place at East Pit Nature Reserve in Lime Kiln Road, Cherry Hinton from 8.30pm on Friday 21 August until late and will be led by local moth expert John Dawson and The Wildlife Trust. Members of the public will have a rare opportunity to meet the moths of this unique reserve and learn more about our nocturnal wildlife.
Laura Watson, Community Conservation Officer for the Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire said: “Moths are magical creatures and not always dull and brown as people may think. There is a huge variety of moths in Britain including some vibrantly coloured ones. By using light traps, we can observe moths up close and see the rare Chalk Carpet and Six-Belted Clearwing moths that are known to live on the reserve.”
East Pit is a former quarry that was bought by the Wildlife Trust last year. This reserve is now open to the public. Results from the moth survey will be used to help the Wildlife Trust understand and manage the ecology of this special site.
