Go batty over our local nightlife
Saturday 29 August is European Bat Night and the Wildlife Trust is organising guided evening walks on several nature reserves, revealing the nightlife of our local bats.
As part of the events, local volunteers will demonstrate methods of surveying for bats and identifying them using ultrasound detectors.
Join staff and volunteers for an illuminating evening’s experience searching for bats on their night-time hunting trips, learn more about their world and see some of the latest bat detection equipment in action. The Wildlife Trust will also be liaising with other organisers of bat events across Europe, comparing the data on bats gathered on the night.
This year bat walks will take place simultaneously on Wildlife Trust nature reserves including Flitwick Moor in Bedfordshire, Cambourne and Grafham Water in Cambridgeshire, Pitsford Water and Summer Leys in Northamptonshire and Woodston Ponds in Peterborough.
Henry Stanier, Ecology Groups officer for the local Wildlife Trust said: “Bats have lived alongside us for thousands of years in our villages, towns and cites, and yet we are often unaware of our quiet neighbours. These events are great ways for people to enjoy a summer’s evening and find out more about these amazing creatures.”
All walks start at 8pm and last approximately 1½ hours. Price £2 per person. To book your place phone 01954 713535 or email ecologygroups@wildlifebcnp.org
