Time for a spring clean!

Help your local Wildlife Trust give Lings Wood a clean up with our Stop the drop event.

On the 17th April, the Wildlife Trust in Northamptonshire will be joining forces with the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) for a community litter pick and you are invited!

Lings Local Nature Reserve, also known as Lings Wood, is located to the east of Northampton town centre and is a fantastic area of urban woodland, perfect for walking and wildlife watching.  The reserve is managed by The Wildlife Trust and is home to our county office.

By working with CPRE as part of their annual 10 day ‘Stop the Drop’ campaign, we hope to address the ongoing battle with litter.

Community Involvement Officer for The Wildlife Trust, Louise Tuffin says “Lings Wood is a really great reserve and is on the doorstep for so many people, making it the ideal place to visit for a walk, picnic or to enjoy wildlife.  Unfortunately litter is something we do tend to suffer from, so doing this community litter pick is a wonderful opportunity to do a bit of a spring clean and for the local community to get out and enjoy the woodland”.

Sally Hanrahan, development and education manager from CPRE Northamtptonshire says “We are delighted to be working with the Wildlife Trust; the consequences of throwing litter can be highly dangerous for all wildlife”.

The litter pick will be attended by staff and volunteers and local people are invited to come along too. Participants can arrive from 9.30am with the litter pick starting at 10am and finishing by 12noon. All equipment will be provided, as well as complimentary refreshments.

Northampton Borough Council are also supporting the event by providing equipment and arranging for the removal of the collected litter.

This is the second year that a community litter pick has taken place at Lings Local Nature Reserve, and organisers are hoping to build on the success of last year.

Louise Tuffin says “We had a great turn out last year which demonstrated that local people take pride in and care about their local natural environment and will not accept it being spoilt by a minority that feel it is ok to drop litter. Hopefully this year will be just as good or even better!”
