Northamptonshire Bioblitz

Bradlaugh Fields

Saturday 5 June- Sunday 6 June

24 hours of species recording with wildlife experts, enthusiasts and novices.

Wildlife enthusiasts are invited to join the Wildlife Trust and the BBC Breathing Places campaign at our bioblitz event at Bradlaugh Fields in Northampton.

There will also be a variety of activities with local wildlife in mind including pond dipping, moth trapping, bat detecting and a series of guided walks all with the aim to see how many wildlife species can be recorded in a 24 hour period. The majority of biodiversity can be hard to find and even harder to identify. Therefore many sites, like Bradlaugh Fields, may have a number of important species we don't know about yet.

The bioblitz event last year at Abington Meadows yielded records of 639 different species, including 8 nationally scarce species and one pondweed thought to be extinct in the county since 1948!

The free event marks the International Year of Biodiversity 2010 promoting the importance of protecting a wide range of species across the UK and around the world. The results of the bioblitz means the Trust will have up to date information on which species are using the site and how we can better manage it. We can tailor our work plans to ensure the conservation of the greatest number of species for years to come.

Bookings are now being taken for the free bat detecting event at 9.30pm and free moth trapping event at 10.30pm on Saturday 5 June. Places are limited, please book through Juliette Butler on 01604 405285/ 07793 606026 or call Ian Wilson on 07734 478469 . Alternatively please email juliette.butler@wildlifebcnp.org. For both events please meet at the barn on the site.

On Sunday 6 June join the Wildlife Trust at Bradlaugh Fields 10-4pm. Please park at the University of Northamptonshire, for directions please click here.

Guided walks will be taking place throughout the day starting at 10am until 3pm on the wildflowers of Bradlaugh, butterflies, insects and a general walk about the site. Those attending the walks will learn more about the work of the Wildlife Trust at this nature reserve but also they will play a vital part in helping to record species found as part of the bioblitz. Experts will be on hand to help identify and answer questions.
