The power of nature
National Grid staff in Northampton have been getting out from behind their desks, donning their boots and fleeces all in the name of helping local wildlife. Over 10 members of staff shared an ‘out of the box’ experience, helping to clear willow and scrub at the Wildlife Trust’s Titchmarsh Nature Reserve near Thrapston.
The ‘work party’ was one of four held every year as part of National Grid’s support for The Wildlife Trust in Northamptonshire. National Grid encourages its employees to take up the challenge of making a real difference both in the local community and to the environment.
Patrick Fox from National Grid said: “I never thought I would volunteer for the Wildlife Trust, simply because I didn’t know it was possible but it’s been great fun and I would strongly suggest other companies to come on board too. You can learn how to work as a team in a scenario which is very different to the ‘day job’ - it’s the ideal kind of team work training. The added bonus is you have lots of fun too!”
Jacinta Fox from National Grid said: “The work is hard and other conditions, such as the weather, can have a big impact on the day. In my experience of these initiatives, the whole team cracks on with the task and makes the event as fun as possible.”
Caroline Prout, Corporate Partnerships Manager for the Wildlife Trust explained: “This is the fourth year of support from our gold corporate members, National Grid, and the help we get from their staff is really important for our work. Nature reserves need a lot of looking after to make sure they are healthy places for wildlife to live in and enjoyable places for people to visit.”
