Environment Minister visits the Great Fen
Environment Minister Richard Benyon paid a visit to the Great Fen to discuss some of the issues and challenges involved in restoring 3,700ha of wetland.
Mr Benyon heard about the Great Fen project and its vision to safeguard threatened habitats and provide a massive greenspace for people, with a wealth of possibilities for recreation, education and the local economy.
On his visit Environment Minister Richard Benyon said: “The Great Fen is not only an area of unique and intense raw beauty, but is vital in helping conserve our wildlife, protecting local communities from floods, and providing them with business opportunities.
“In Japan last month we played a significant role in helping to successfully achieve a new global plan to protect the world’s natural environment. 193 countries agreed to take action to help stop the loss of habitats and species by 2020. What I have seen today demonstrates why that agreement is so important.”
