Conservation officer

Location: Great Cambourne, Cambridgeshire
Full-time: Five days a week, 37.5 hours
Salary: £17,000 - £19,000

The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough is among the largest of 47 Wildlife Trusts across Britain and a major contributor to the nationwide work of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts. Our mission is to bring people together to take action for wildlife.

The conservation officer post provides a core role in the Trust’s wider countryside team, with responsibility for delivery of Living Landscape projects, the Trust’s advocacy and planning work, and undertaking surveys for and providing advice to a wide range of landowners, local government, businesses and individuals.

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to make a major contribution to the work of the Trust. Working as part of a team, you will be responsible for:

  • helping to develop and deliver an exciting range of Living Landscape projects covering ancient woodlands, rivers and wet meadows, and chalk and limestone grasslands;
  • promoting integration of biodiversity into land use planning policies and other strategies;
  • using the planning system to achieve significant gains for wildlife and habitats and to protect important wildlife sites;
  • providing management advice to local government, landowners and businesses;
  • undertaking surveys and monitoring of key wildlife sites including County Wildlife Sites, SSSIs and Wildlife Trust nature reserves;
  • manage voluntary officers and organise their training; and
  • promote the work of the Wildlife Trust to a wide range of audiences

You should have experience of working in nature conservation or another similar discipline. You will need an understanding of the principles of ecology, the practice of nature conservation and a good general knowledge of British natural history.

You will have an interest and enthusiasm for wildlife. You will need good organisational skills with the ability to manage a demanding workload. You will have with strong communication skills, effective negotiating skills, sound judgement, and a mature, pragmatic and flexible approach.
