Great Fen Education & Community Involvement Officer


Location: Based at Ramsey Heights Countryside Classroom, near Woodwalton Fen, with some travel across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough required. The project will focus on the Great Fen Project area, Peterborough and Huntingdonshire.

Hours: Full Time. 37.5 hours per week; 25 days’ paid annual leave plus statutory public holidays.

Fixed-term post: from October 2009 through September 2013

Pay: Band E, £17,500-£19,500 per annum depending on experience (plus contributory pension after six months).

The Role:The Wildlife Trust is seeking a highly-motivated, experienced environmental educator to develop and deliver educational programmes community involvement work for the Great Fen Project. The Great Fen Project is a landscape-scale initiative to restore 3700 hectares of fenland habitat surrounding two National Nature Reserves, Holme Fen and Woodwalton Fen. It is a partnership project involving the Environment Agency, Huntingdonshire District Council, Middle Level Commissioners, Natural England and the Wildlife Trust. Thanks to grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and other donors, the Wildlife Trust has recently secured the Holmewood Estate, 1300 hectares of land around Holme Fen.  The Trust provides a variety of educational and community-based services to help inspire people of all ages to take action for wildlife, and the HLF grant has provided funds for development and delivery of education and community involvement programmes for the communities surrounding the Great Fen and beyond. The Trust’s education and community objectives are an integral part of the established Trust Development Plan and closely in line with conservation objectives.

The successful candidate will report to the Great Fen Education & Community Manager and will work in close collaboration with other project staff undertaking conservation, education and community work.

Candidates with an environmental background, at least 2 years’ work experience, and experience in leading outdoor education for children and adults are encouraged to apply. A valid driving licence, vehicle and a satisfactory enhanced CRB Disclosure are required.
